Long-serving Fairlie Yacht Club volunteer Pete Wright was left speechless during the 2025 Largs Regatta Festival when honoured with an 911制品Scotland Impact Award in a surprise presentation led by Fairlie Sailing Club Commodore Calum McPhee 鈥 with a special assist from Pete鈥檚 son, professional sailor Ruaridh Wright.

The award was presented during the prizegiving ceremony for the Festival鈥檚 popular 鈥楥umbraes Weekend鈥 鈥 an event for which Pete has served as Race Officer for decades. His tireless voluntary service to both the regatta and Fairlie Yacht Club鈥檚 wider race programme has earned him admiration across the Scottish sailing community.

鈥淚 had no idea 鈥 absolutely no idea. I don鈥檛 look for praise鈥鈥檓 absolutely blown away, and Ruaridh coming to join us today is unbelievable. I鈥檓 blown away鈥

Pete鈥檚 calm leadership, deep expertise, and unwavering commitment to the sport were formally recognised by 911制品Scotland following a nomination from the community.

Adding a deeply personal touch to the occasion was the unexpected arrival of Ruaridh, who now lives and sails professionally on the south coast of England. Having learned to sail locally with his dad, Ruaridh鈥檚 presence was kept secret until the moment of the award, making the emotional tribute even more poignant.

Standing at 6ft 7in, Ruaridh wasn鈥檛 easy to hide 鈥 but thanks to a well-planned entrance via a storage space with two access points at Largs Sailing Club, he was able to appear at just the right moment, walking straight into the heart of the prizegiving to join the presentation.

Speaking after the award, Pete said:

鈥淚 had no idea 鈥 absolutely no idea. I don鈥檛 look for praise鈥鈥檓 absolutely blown away, and Ruaridh coming to join us today is unbelievable. I鈥檓 blown away鈥

Pleased to see his Dad recognised for decades of hard work, Ruaridh said:

鈥淵ou can鈥檛 race without a race officer, not without the support from them, the mark layers 鈥揺veryone.

鈥淚 think for the sport it鈥檚 important to have people like Dad because they鈥檙e willing to give up their time and energy to make things happen. It鈥檚 a really special thing to observe.鈥
